An important life skill is learning to make effective transitions, whether it is starting at a new school, moving house or starting your career. Getting off to a good start is important, but the hardest part is keeping up your enthusiasm during the bumps in the road.
What are 5 keys to effective change management?
- Have and clearly state compelling goals.
- Have a clear picture of what you want to achieve.
- Visualize your successful completion of these goals.
- Reassess your goals as new information becomes available adjust as necessary.
- Record your progress in a journal.
- Meet people and get involved.
- Be active in your new environment, extend a hand of friendship.
- Get involved and support important local activities.
- Manage time and money effectively.
- Spend enough time on your priorities.
- Attend class, work or whatever activities are part of your new life. Be present for the experience!
- Control your spending. Live with in your budget and avoid expensive credit card debt.
- Keep timely communications with friends and family.
- Call and check in with your friends and family. They will love to hear from you and it will lift your spirits.
- Plan visits to reconnect and to renew your enthusiasm at critical times.
- Raise the flag and let people know when you need support!
- Be responsible, success or failure is in your control.
- Take care of your health.
- Keep active; get some form of daily exercise.
- Ask for help when you need it.
- Own your results, if something isn’t right accept responsibility and work to make it better.
- Take action to resolve potential issues before they grow into major problems.
Managing transitions is really about managing risks, be strong and enjoy the adventure!
